the HobbyBots Red Devils
This was one of our first FLL teams. A group of 11 students from our first summer teaching lego camp would simply not go away, once the summer was over, they wanted more!! So we heard about FLL from our good friend Mrs. Peggy Scott and thought we would give it a try. Never did we expect it to lead to the years of fun we have had, with lots of successes and failures, one of the greatest experiences not only a child can have but also a coach!
Since a team had to be 10 or less and we never want to say "no" to anyone, we made 2 teams, one of 5 and one of 6. The Red Devils consisted of Amanda, Chris, Cole, Eddie and Jack. The 4 boys all came from Kilbride, north of Burlington so they had to be on a team together for driving and Amanda, well, she couldn't be on the same team as her brother Jacob. The devils had an awesome time together, Amanda learning very quickly on that she was going to have to be in charge of the boys and get them in line! They solved the climate project with and for their presentation decided to do a rap song presenting their research. (see video below) They did an awesome job, because they finished the Halton Peel Regional in first place with the Champions award!! Our first of many to come.... They qualified for the Provincials which was held the next weekend at St. Mildreds in Oakville. That was a great day, pushing John around on a chair because he hurt his back and being part of something we really were not prepared for! It was overwelming, the best teams in the province! The team did receive a trophy that day and the whole experience just wet their appetite for many years to come.
